Title: Interaction Design: What do we already know and what do we still not know?

Speaker: Prof. Steve Whittaker, University of California at Santa Cruz

Abstract: HCI is no longer a new discipline. In 30 years it has had notable technical, organizational and intellectual successes. In this talk I will use the classic HCI design cycle (Understanding Users, Generating Designs, Prototyping and Evaluation) to evaluate our progress. Using multiple examples from our discipline, I will conclude that while we have had large scale successes (e.g. graphical user interfaces and WYSIWYG) and have developed strong methods for Evaluation, we know far less about other aspects of design, including what we mean by "experience", and how we map from user observations into designs. I will also talk about the need to develop abstract design principles that provide guidelines for building different classes of system. I will use these observations to motivate a research agenda for HCI targetting what we still dont know.

Speaker bio: Steve Whittaker is a Professor of Human-Computer Interaction at the University of California at Santa Cruz. He works at the intersection of psychology and computation where he uses insights from cognitive and social science to design new digital tools to support effective attentional focus, memory, collaboration, and socializing. He has consulted for and been funded by Google, IBM, HP, Xerox and Microsoft, as well as the US and UK governments. His past inventions and patents include one of the first IM systems, the first social network email client, VisualVoicemail, Meeting Capture, speech browsing and emotion regulation tools. He is a member of the distinguished ACM CHI Academy and is the editor of Human-Computer Interaction journal, the highest impact journal in HCI.
